Chitter Chatter

Ella's 4th birthday is approaching quite quickly. I asked her what sort of cake she would like...

Me: What sort of cake would you like for your birthday this year Ellie?
El: [thinking for a moment] A strawberry shortcake one please.
Me: Ooh, that might be a bit tricky. I dont know how to make strawberry shortcake ones.
El: [excitedly] yeah you can!
Me: but i dont know how...
El: [very matter of factly] You just wear a chef's hat & then you will know how to do it!!
Me: oh so thats what I have to do...
El: [nods head] Yes.

So apparently all cake making knowledge is found in a chef's hat. Must get me one of those...

Sound too easy. Get a hat and get cracking!

I'm thinking a 4-year-old probably means a packet cake mix decorated with Strawberry Shortcake & All Things Pink, instead of mucking about with shortening and stuff?

Hang on, no, I've just found these: do they help?

(for which you'll need http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/8017/basic+shortbread)

Wow. Hmm. Good luck!

Given that she's probably never had strawberry shortcake, why not just buy a plain sponge cake and join the two halves together with fresh cream and strawberries? And slather cream and strawberries all over the top as well.

Or, you know, MAKE a sponge cake, if you're so inclined...

Thanks for the links Kate :) I had never thought to actually do a strawberry shortcake... I think she was meaning the character strawberry shortcake... remember her from the 80's :D
Femina... Homebrand packet mixes are my speciality :P

I wasn't even thinking a packet mix, I was thinking a plain undecorated sponge from Woollies. You know, the ones you buy in the cake/bread section. They're designed for the non-sponge-makers amongst us to take them home, decorate them and pretend we made them.

Awww I love the wisdom that little kids offer ; ). I had a situation recently where my son David (8) and his sister (5) were in the kitchen squabbling. He turned around and said in a matter of fact tone, "You've got to respect your elderlies Lily"...It certainly put a smile on my face for the rest of that afternoon : )

She's got it all figured out!

Pink cake with strawberries on it, definitely.
