Help us decide...

We are in the middle of making some important bathroom decisions. Tonight it is tiles.
We are having trouble deciding on a tile pattern. Squint your eyes and have a look below... Keeping in mind that our house is almost 80 years old, and the wall tiles are 300mm x 600mm (quite large) which tile pattern looks the best? The regular up & down type or the brick pattern?

Comments greatly appreciated...
p.s the long verticle lines represent the VJ walls... lol

I like the brick pattern, I think it would go with the age of your house and the pattern is different than the tile floor (ie: not all lined up)~ if that makes sense?? Good luck!!

I'm going the other way. I think the brick pattern may make it look not quite as classy as the other. Plus it is in keeping with the parallel lines of the VJ walls.

I also like the regular straight up pattern -its in keeping with the straight lines of the floor pattern. imho

I like the brick pattern BUT in terms of cleaning the grout I think the other is more practical.

I like straight up. It's clean and modern, but not so way out that it will clash with the age of your house.

I'm a brick pattern fan, but straight would be easier to clean if this is in the shower or something.

Ha ha - we've been no help, hey!

If your house is almost 80 years old then I think you should honour the distinct history of the tile setting pattern, which would have been brick set. There shouldn't be any difference in the ability to get a good cleaning of the grout - which should be neutral grey and sealed - whichever pattern you choose. And why such large tile and not the classic 3x6? Just my very strong opinion, since historic tile is what I'm all about!!

There is a difference in cleaning grout if you use a grout brush... with the 'straight' pattern you can follow the straight lines the whole way without getting stuck in the corner of the tile. With the 'brick' pattern you have corners at a T-intersection (if that makes sense) so for the vertical lines any gunk is harder to clean at that spot.

Sorry... I worked as a cleaner through uni days and showers with a 'brick' tile setting were definitely more work to clean!

We dont want to go fully traditional. We plan on living here for a long time so we want it to be our style, but in sayng that we dont want it to fully clash either. We love the big tiles.

I have been thinking straight and brick alternately today. I think you can't really go wrong, they're both nice. Glad your tiler said you could have 300x600 tiles, I love them (we put them in our kitchen - that one we don't have anymore?)

Mum is currently doing her kitchen and her house is only 30 years old - her tiler said big tiles may be a problem if the walls aren't 100% perfect. I think maybe he's wrong? If anything is a bit out they'll fix it with grout won't they? Humph to HIM, I say. Glad you can have them, they will look great!

Right - I've just had YET ANOTHER look and I'm going for STRAIGHT - looks all bathroomy instead of outside-wallish.

That's technical talk, of course.

i'm going with the regular up and down type. Just because the house is 80yrs old doesn't mean that you have to go with the brick style that would have been used then. It isn't going to clash either way IMO, so may as well go for something that suits you guys.
